Survey of Industry Cargo Demand at KIX Indicates Around 50% of Demand for Services to North America and Europe | |
The survey was distributed to companies that have production and logistics bases in Kansai between June and July and answers were collected from 156 companies. The greatest demand was for the North America route at 25.3% followed by Europe at 24.4%, which together amount to almost half of the overall demand. The shortage of services to the two regions has long been pointed out. China and Southeast Asia were next at 21.0% and 14.3% respectively. The overview of demand for respective destinations is as shown below: • North America: Demand for cargo services to destinations here is strongest. Highest demand was for flights from Japan with many requesting 3 to 7 services a week. Popular cities : Los Angeles (30%), Chicago (21%), New York (18%), San Francisco (9%), etc. • Europe: Strongest demand in terms of requests for cargo services from individual companies. As with North America, mainly included requests for 3 to 7 weekly services from KIX. Popular cities : Frankfurt (21%), London (20%), Amsterdam (17%), Milan (15%), etc. • East Asia: Frequent calls for additional flights on Shanghai, Hong Kong and other existing services. Strong demand for late-night departure flights and daily operation. Also, demand for services via other airports in Japan. Popular cities : Shanghai (26%), Hong Kong (25%), Taipei (14%), Seoul (8%), etc. • Southeast Asia: Approximately equal demand for departure and arrival services. Strong demand for early evening-nighttime services and early morning services, as well as for daily operation. Popular cities : Bangkok (20%), Ho Chi Minh City (18%), Singapore (18%), Jakarta (11%), Kuala Lumpur (11%), etc. • Other Regions: Some demand for new services to India, Brazil, etc. Cities requested : Delhi, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Sydney, Guam, Chennai and numerous other cities. The Kansai region is home to many manufacturing bases of LCD panels, semiconductors, solar battery panels, lithium-ion batteries, medical supplies etc. Since more and more huge production bases are going to be built in the area between 2009 and 2015, the demand for freighter services will be growing remarkably. The survey shows that both cargo airlines and KIAC need expand the cargo service network at KIX. |
