Test on "Hydrogen Bike" Under Way
image
Kansai International Airport Co.(KIAC) and Iwatani Corp. kicked off a demonstration test at the Kansai International Airport for a motorized "hydrogen bicycle" that generates electricity with hydrogen.
The green bicycle is fitted with a simple hydrogen fuel cell and Iwatani's proprietary hydrogen cartridge. When battery power runs low, hydrogen is automatically fed from the demountable hydrogen cartridge to the fuel cell, generating electricity through hydrogen/oxygen reaction and recharging the battery. It is possible to recharge while running with motor assistance.
A hydrogen bicycle emits no carbon dioxide, thus reducing the volume of CO2 by 2.4 kg compared with the amount of CO2 a gasoline-fueled vehicle discharges when it runs a distance of 6 km. This is equivalent to achieving two days worth under Japan’s goal of cutting CO2 emissions by 1 kg per person per day.
